Regensburg

As I mentioned in my planning section I had planned a trip up to Regensburg for 2 days, to check out a different town and to visit Edmund who I had met at various TTP Conferences in the past, when I was involved with that. I headed there on the 09:44 train and took about 1hr 30min to get there.

Thankfully my Airbnb hosts said I could go straight there and drop off my bag, which I did and get info on the apartment. Edmund offered to then collect me from there, chatted to a few people back home while I relaxed in the sun waiting for him to arrive.

Once Edmund collected me we went into the old town area. First of all we headed to get something for lunch first. Edmund suggested a place called Historische Wurstküche I had the traditional speciality "At the Donaustrudel, right next to the Stone Bridge, the historic Wurstkuchl has been standing for over 500 years. Where the Regensburg stonemasons and dockworkers indulged themselves in the Middle Ages, much has remained the same to this day: the open charcoal grill, the homemade sausages made from pure pork ham, the sauerkraut from their own fermentation cellar and the well-known Wurstkuchl mustard the historical recipe by Elsa Schricker." Was tasty. Over lunch we did a video call with Peter Atkins who I hadn't chatted to in ages, was cool to catchup briefly.

After lunch we took a wander around the town a bit back in the direction of the carpark. Chatting about odds and ends on the way. I left Edmund at about 14:30 and did all sorts of sights around the town.

Went across the Stone Bridge, when you see pictures of it you will think it looks like the one in Prague, well ... actually they copied this one. Had a really nice sugar cone ice cream from the one shop there, yummy.

Got back to my Airbnb and relaxed a bit and then quickly headed out to the local shop to get something for dinner before they closed, and something for breakfast as that wasn't included in this booking. Having had a later lunch I wasn't overly hungry and just needed a small snack in the evening.

Wednesday morning was another Regensburg sightseeing day. I had arranged with my hosts to leave my bag there and to collect it later in the day, which again was great to be able to do. I headed out via the one city park. Edmund's wife Monika does sightseeing tours in Regensburg for bus / boat tours that visit so he/she asked me if I would like to join one of those on Wednesday, yes please. Met her at the start point and engaged full "tourist mode" with my radio and earpiece for the tour info. The tour was great, gave some good overview on the town and things I'd not have known otherwise.

After the tour we checked a few other small things out and then took the bus out to the University to meet Edmund for lunch. We met at the Mensa which was the University restaurant (I think). I had a nice beer and a massive pizza. Edmund kindly paid for the meal again as he had the day before, which was not expected, but very kind of him; he said Regensburg was quite an expensive town so was happy to do that when people come to visit.

After lunch Monika headed off and we went to Edmund's office and he showed me round there and I got to see their data center/servers etc. Was interested to see theirs vs how we have ours back home. After that Edmund dropped me back at my Airbnb, where I collected my bag and then headed back to the train station for my trip back to Munich. I thoroughly enjoyed my 2 days in Regensburg. I then had a busy evening ahead of me.
